Ric Lindley is a grandfather first and a police officer second.
When the Jefferson County Sheriff Deputy happened upon a traffic accident Tuesday morning near Leeds, Alabama, he used his parenting skills to help comfort those involved in the crash, including the baby daughter of a shaken young mother. And now a photo of Lindley holding the child has reached and inspired thousands of people across the country.
Lindley tells Al.com that he and his partner, Deputy Tim Sanford, were the first officers at the scene of the crash. After aiding the injured, Lindley spotted the young mother leaning against her car holding an infant who was upset, but unharmed. Lindley approached the woman to ask if she was ok, and offered to hold her child for her.
The deputy says that he held the baby for about an hour and a half while the young woman regained her composure. And as a grandfather with three adult sons and seven grandchildren, Lindley hardly needed help calming the child. That's when Sanford snapped the now-viral photo.
In the time since the Jefferson Country Sheriff's Department shared the photo on Facebook, it's garnered hundreds of comments and more than 7,000 shares. Lindley tells AL that he's not sure what all the fuss is about.
"I'm just a man. I'm not better or worse than anyone else," he told AL. "I'm just a Dad and a grandfather. That's about it."
