Man jailed for breaking into asylum and stealing human brains to sell on Ebay for Halloween

A man has been jailed after breaking into a former lunatic asylum and stealing jars of brains to sell on Facebook as Halloween decorations.
David Charles, 23, was sentenced to four years in jail after admitting stealing human tissue from the Indiana Medical History Museum.

The young man broke into the museum, which is a former hospital for the insane, on multiple times in September 2013.
A museum worker said possibly 1,000 pieces were stolen as well as the copper piping from the building.
According to reports in the Indy Star, he was flogging his bizarre takings on social media.
Charles had a Facebook status update posted on October 14 2013 stating: “Yo I got a bunch of human brains in jars for sale hmu for details u know u want one for Halloween.”
The museum is on the site of the former Central State Hospital, which served patients with psychiatric and mental disorders from 1848 to 1994.
Doctors autopsied some of those patients, and kept their remains perserved in jars, to learn more about mental illness.
Brains in a jar
According to a police report, the total value of glass jars containing the human tissue was valued at approximately £3,175.
Charles was arrested in December 2013 after a San Diego man who bought six jars of brain material for £397 on eBay alerted police, according to court documents.
Charles had sold the items to a third party who had in turn sold them to the San Diego man, who matched the items he bought to those stolen from the museum based on research he did online.
Investigators were able to identify Charles because he left behind a piece of paper with a bloody fingerprint in the museum.
They recovered 80 jars of human tissue, according to court documents.
Charles, who was ordered to stay away for the museum, also stole an EKG machine, about 10 scopes, a baby scale and other miscellaneous historical items from the museum, Deer.
Charles, who pleaded guilty to six counts of burglary and receiving stolen goods,
Three years of Charles' four-year sentence were suspended.
He will spend one year on home detention, two years on probation and is required to obtain a high school diploma or general educational development certificate under the sentencing agreement.
