Barcelona player Javier Mascherano in Tax fraud Scandal.

A charge on two counts of tax fraud was launched against Barcelona player Javier Mascherano by Spain’s public prosecution service, a court filing revealed on Monday.
The Argentine is alleged to have failed to declare over 1.5 million euros ($1.7 million, £1.1 million) in 2011 and 2012 made through his image rights by ceding the rights to companies he owns in Portugal and the United States with favourable tax rates.
The filing also confirmed Mascherano deposited just short of 1.75 million euros with the tax authorities on September 9 this year to repay the amount owed plus interest.
Mascherano is just the latest high-profile footballer to be scrutinised by the tax authorities in Spain over the declaration of money made through image rights.
Four-time World Player of the Year Lionel Messi appeared before a judge in 2013 after he and his father were accused of defrauding the public purse of 4.16 million euros ($4.7 million, £3 million) after his image rights were ceded to companies in Belize and Uruguay.
Bayern Munich midfielder Xabi Alonso also categorically denied any wrongdoing last week after Spanish newspaper El Mundo claimed he was being investigated for a scheme similar to that used by Mascherano.

Maritime workers threaten to shut ports over unpaid salaries

The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria on Monday threatened to shut down seaports on Friday if the Nigerian Ports Authority failed to pay six months outstanding salary arrears to its members.
The President-General of the union, Mr Tony Nted, gave the threat in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos.
Nted said the workers, including tally clerks and on-board security men were aggrieved over the unpaid salaries.
He said, “This is now about the workers, who have been owed salaries even after NPA promised to pay long before now.
“In frustration, the workers attacked the zonal office of the union, saying the union had not pursued their payments vigorously.
“We are just lucky that people were not injured.
“However, they made their grievances known to the NPA and threatened to shut the ports by Friday if payments are not made.
“NPA has been promising to pay, but now they refused to pay.”
The Public Affairs Manager of NPA, Capt. Iheanacho Ebubeogu, told the aggrieved workers to meet their employers.
He said the NPA would prefer to deal directly with stevedoring companies, who should in turn attend to their workers, rather than the NPA dealing with the dockworkers.

We are winning war against Boko Haram, FG insists

Image result for boko haram
The Federal Government on Monday insisted that despite the isolated violence being witnessed in some parts of the country, Nigeria is winning the war against the Boko Haram sect.
The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Defence, Aliyu Ismaila, said this in an interview with journalists on the sideline of the ongoing 70th United Nations General Assembly holding in New York.
Ismaila said the nation’s security agencies were battle ready more than ever before to end insurgency in the country within the deadline given to them by President Muhammadu Buhari.
“We are winning the war. We have put machinery in place to meet the presidential deadline handed over to us and we are sure that the nation’s security agencies are up to the task,” he said.
Ismaila also expressed the conviction that Buhari’s participation in the UNGA would also attract benefits to the country.
He said, “The President is attending the UN General Assembly for the first time and he had created a great impact on issues concerning security, trade and investment as well as climate change.
“Nigeria is doing very well and we are very proud that we have a President who is very focused and who world leaders have tremendous confidence in.”
Ismaila also faulted the criticisms that have trailed Buhari’s absence at a meeting on Friday on the Boko Haram sect and internally displaced persons.
The permanent secretary insisted that the meeting was not in the President’s schedule.
He said if the country was aware of the parley, there was no way the President or his officials would not have attended, especially with the importance attached to the terrorism war.
He added, “It is most unfortunate that people just say whatever they feel like saying.
“Before we left Nigeria, there were meetings that were penciled down for the President to attend.
“On arrival here, these meetings were reviewed and some others were added.
“To the best of my knowledge, that meeting on Boko Haram was never included in the agenda.
“Nigeria is one country that is addressing this issue of Boko Haram. It is very important to the country and if it was included in the agenda, the President or his officials would have attended.”

Plateau State varsity to get accredication soon – NUC boss

Plateau State University. PHOTO: adelove

The Plateau State University, Bokkos, will soon have all its 17 courses accredited, the National Universities Commission (NUC) has assured.
NUC Executive Secretary, Prof. Julius Okojie, who gave the assurance in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), when he visited the university on Monday, blamed the lingering accreditation problem on “the failure of past Plateau governments to do the needful”.
NAN reports that the university which was established 10 years ago and currently has over 2,000 students in 17 departments in four faculties, had existed without any accreditation from the NUC.
Okojie blamed the lingering problem of accreditation on the past governments that “just refused to do the right thing”.
The NUC boss said that the issue would soon be a thing of the past, since the current Plateau administration was doing all it could to ensure things were put aright.
“We seriously sympathize with our students for all the pains and trauma they have gone through as a result of the lack of accreditation of the university.
“We told the former administrations the right things to do, but they never heeded.
“Be that as it may, I want to assure you that the turning point of this university is by the corner; I have the pen and the paper, very soon, most of your courses will get accredited,” he said.
Okojie commended the university for the “slow but steady progress it was making”, and called on the Plateau government to sustain the support to make for optimal productivity.
He, however, decried the dearth of qualified members of staff in the university, and urged its administrators to sponsor their staff for further studies.
“The university must do more to help its teachers to obtain PhD s.
“The school is making steady progress, but they need more of quality staff and infrastructural development.
“So, I urge the state government to ensure that adequate funds are released to the school in order to meet up with our standard,” he said.
Okojie charged the university’s staff to avoid unwholesome activities, especially the corrupt tendencies to victimize innocent students.
He also urged the university to incorporate its host communities into its activities, so as promote mutual affection and respect.
“Let the host community feel the university and let the university also enjoy the support of the community, that way, much will be achieved,” he said.
The Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Danjuma Sheni, told NAN that staff development was of utmost concern to his administration.
“We have a strong staff development programme; currently, more than 25 of our staff are in foreign universities pursuing their PhD programmes.
”We intend to make it a routine thing where each year, we will send not less than 17 staff for studies.
“I want to make sure that by the time I complete my tenure, we will have a minimum of 85 staff with PhDs,” he said.
Sheni assured that the university would do all within its powers to ensure that its courses were accredited by the NUC without further delay.

Noise pollution is a human right violation – Lawyers

Some lawyers on Monday said uncontrolled noise pollution constitutes gross human right violation.

The lawyers said in separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria that noise pollution infringed on the rights of others, aside its health hazards.
Mr Ahmed Goniri, the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice in Yobe, said it was important to protect citizens through strict application of existing laws.
“Naturally some people cannot sleep with noise around them, that means when you are making a noise, you are infringing into their rights of peaceful existence and enjoyment of their rights.
“It goes to show that you are tripling into someone’s right and this can be adequately taken care of by enactment of laws,”he said
He attributed the problem to the level of education of the people.
“We have so many problems actually in the society, we have a mix up of different people educated and non educated, to some, making a noise is something to be proud of and to others unnecessary noise making without considering where you are is definitely detrimental,” Goniri said.
The commissioner commended the Lagos State Government for taking steps to curb the challenges of noise pollution in the state.
Mr Abeny Mohammed, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, lamented that the issue of noise pollution has not been taken seriously in the country.
